Glass Vase Place Card Holders

Here’s a photo of our place card holders for this weekend's dinner party. They’re 3-inch high round glass vases, which I found at Hobby Lobby a few months ago. They added a nice touch to the dinner party tables. These vases were actually part of Hobby Lobby’s wedding supplies product line, but I think they work well for dinner parties (as does a lot of “wedding favors”).

Besides Hobby Lobby, I have found several other companies online that carry glass vase place card holders of some kind, such as Save on Crafts (www.save-on-crafts.com/blossomcard.html), Inglenook Décor (www.theinglenookdecor.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=HA%2DA1509%2D0) , Hanson Ellis (www.hansonellis.com/vase-place-card-holders.html ), Alibaba (www.alibaba.com/product-gs/526598346/glass_card_holder.html) and Favors and Flowers (www.favorsandflowers.com/round-glass-vase-and-place-card-holder.htm). Again, these are marketed as wedding favors, but they really add a special touch to dinner parties too.

I really like to have place card holders when I’m hosting a large dinner party of eight people or more. That way you can figure out ahead of time where everyone should sit (rather than have to do it after everyone arrives and are waiting to be seated, which may be the same time you need to do last-minute food prep), so you can increase the odds that there will be good conversation and your guests will sit next to people they can “mesh well” with. I also think place card holders add a nice decorative touch. I especially liked these vase place card holders, because I was going for a definite color theme with this party—deep purple and gold—and I was able to choose flowers (deep purple carnations which I ordered in advance from a florist) that added to the color scheme.

These place card holders are easy to assemble. You just have to put glass pebbles, crystals or marbles to the bottom of the vase—to cover maybe the bottom fourth to third of the vase. Add some greenery—ferns or even ivy or baby’s breath, and then cut your carnations so there’s about 3 ½ inches of stem. Arrange the carnation in the center and the accent foliage around it. Then fill the vase about ¾ with water. You can assemble these vase place card olders 24 hours in advance and they’ll look just fine. It’ll definitely add a special touch to your table!
